Done as an entry into the FreeGreen home competition for Greensburg Kansas, this project was developed as a prefab home with a plug n’ play approach to dealing with the site. The winner of the competition would have the project realized and it would serve as a model for the development potential as Greensburg rebuilt after a devastating F1 tornado tore through the city.
Compartmentalized as a separate unit – the plumbing, heating and electrical components (bathroom stack, kitchen, laundry and mechanical room) were to be delivered to the site, with the living components added. Modular shelving ‘walls’ were employed as separations for interior spaces, to create a flexible living environment. A monitoring station was included on the first floor to track energy performance and an array of sensors built into the home.
A retractable staircase, as well as a slide-out modular kitchen table & seating was employed for even greater flexibility within the space.
