It’s been almost 3 months since I posted anything. Well, not entirely true. It’s been 3 months since I wrote it down in here.
There’s been a lot going on, some good, some struggles, and life in general. I’ll break this apart in to digestible separate posts – but one thing is clear to me. I need to write it all down. This endeavor was all about sharing process, and instead – I dug in to providing other content.
All of that can now be found under the ‘Work‘ Tab up there. My partial portfolio of past projects, and the road so far…
I’ve been sifting thru backups, restoring drives, digging into a box of old hard drives and trying to resurrect my past. It’s an interesting process by itself – and a healthy dose of deja vu from the adventures of 2008-2009.
Of course, I can’t recall losing most of the my work samples and project archives in a perfectly timed drive failure that could only happen in 2020, so that part is definitely new.
Most of that wasn’t at all interesting – but that’s no excuse for not writing it all down.
I haven’t shared the struggles of an evolving style guide with posting projects, or working backward thru already posted projects to try and build a connected narrative of imagery. I’m probably going to be tinkering with that for a long time. I pre-planned, but I also learned a bit about the capabilities of WordPress and the Elementor plugins. Up to and including now where I’m trying to build a catalog menu of shortcuts to my project types. The menu tool grabs images from the feature image. Setting a feature image though, scales it strangely when you share thru other media platforms – which probably means I have to recreate those images instead of pulling from a library.
I skipped the couple weeks I spent modeling and putting together a bill of materials, budget, and sales sources for a re-roof on a garage, only to have the project cancelled last minute and pushed to next year.
I haven’t shared the week that I spent redoing an overgrown garden back home, or the long weekend closing out the family cottage and winterizing a residence.
Or the phone call that I got from the state licensing board on the way home from that trip late September.
It all counts toward the process. My personal path to building this out. My focus slipped from documenting process to putting my head down and solving the problem in front of me – which has been my shortcoming since I started this site, and the missed years not having an online presence at all.
As they say – if you’re not screwing up and making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.
